Mount Katahdin is the northern U.S. terminus of the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail. Of its several summits, Baxter Peak, at 5,267* feet, is Maines highpoint and ranks seventh of high peaks of the northeast. An outstanding feature of this granite mountain is its massive isolation--rising more than 4200 feet higher than its immediate surroundings. Hikers attempting the summits of Katahdin are well advised to be prepared for changing weather conditions.
