Mount Marcy, high point of New York state, is surrounded by 42 peaks measuring 4000+ feet, all within Adirondack State Park. The park was established in 1892 and is the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States.
Hikers can choose a long, strenuous day hike, or stretch it out over two days by camping overnight on the mountain and summitting Marcy and the surrounding peaks the next day.
Because it is one of the most climbed mountains in the world hikers may not find solitude, but they will find a fine view from the open summit, 800 feet above the treeline.
The Native American name for the cone-shaped mountain is Tahawus, meaning cloud splitter.
